Post by HermitPost by Gwenhyffar MilgiWe're back in The Netherlands, just testing my new internet service,
newsgroups should be good on this one.
Hey, good to hear from you again! How did the move go?
Not too bad, not too bad. The last few days were horrendous. Hubby
left for our new home to do some decorating 10 days before we were due
to move, and I stayed on to do the packing. About a week before the
move my harddisk controller zonked out and all I had left was boxes, a
mattress on the floor and 4 channels on the telly, one of which was
Ess bloody pedwar bloody Ec, so that left three.
No car, so long walks with the dog during the day and nothing to do at
night.
Still, removal day came, the big truck was filled up, everything fit,
next day we drove to Hull and in the morning up to our new house,
where everything was finished and done and all we had to do was move
our stuff in and get the boxes unpacked.
We of course had our fill of the Dutch administrative system
straightaway, which cost us a day but that's all done now as well.
Next day hubby put up the new multipc modem and we could plug in two
computers, my harddisk controller is gone, so hubby gave me the
laptop, which I still have to reorganise as it was his travel machine,
but at least I can sit on the sofa and type away marvelling at my new
home.
It's different. We've lived in this area before, so at least that's
not new, but there is an enormous difference between waking up and
seeing the mountains and waking up and seeing the flat fields
stretching for miles. A 20 metre walk and I'm in the middle of
nowhere, which is good.
We've got a lovely three bedroom semi-detached in a very small
village, so it's nice and quiet and although it seems to be brat
central, one of the advantages of a tiny village seems to be that
they're that much better behaved. And not too many teenagers, as
there's no secondary school (just two primary schools), so no youfs
hanging around at night causing havoc.
It's quiet here too, which is nice, because I was rather worried about
soundlevels, I do like the quiet.
We have a South facing garden which is big enough to have a
veggy-patch in, we're on a sideroad so no through traffic (well, there
really is no through traffic in this village), and one thing I do
enjoy is the big windows and the fact that there is light in the house
without having to turn lights on, which we didn't have in our little
cottage in Wales.
I was sad to leave Wales, and especially sad to leave our house, but
this place has advantages too and all in all I'm quite sure we did the
right thing in going back, if only for the far superior healthcare
that you get here as compared to where we were.
The dog has been rather confused, and has woken us up a few times at
night howling, but last night she didn't howl until it was almost time
to get up, so she's getting used to it as well. I think once all the
stuff is in its place she'll be fine.
And of course it was good fun meeting up with old friends, going round
to see what has changed and what hasn't, and finding all the
advantages in our new home (about 15 years old), such as as much hot
water as you want throughout the day, square rooms and more channels
on the telly than you can throw a stick at <gggg>.
All in all, I think we did the right thing, at least when we're both
old and decrepit, it'll be easier to get out the house when we don't
have to climb up our drive to do it!

Here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
Let us drink and be merry, all grief to refrain
For we may and might never all meet here again
